Thank you, MK, for your words and for using your platform and wide reach to speak the truths that need to be spoken. As a parent of a member of that community, I feel every one of them. I wear rainbow laces on my shoes when I'm in the classroom. Every day except two at least one student has commented on them. Several have even asked me if I wear them to show my support for the community and every time I respond with, "You're darn right I do." Every single student within those walls needs to know that they are safe and the teachers have their backs. Every one. No exceptions.
I wish I could write about this as well as you have MK but I get far too personal. Iβm a mom of a wonderful gay man so I take ready offense at scared, brainwashed homophobes. So will you allow this mother to share your well thought out words? We are one with the LGBTQ community here.
As I read your heartbreaking story, I felt myself losing my grip on normalcy and began to cry. I have never understood this kind of hatred toward another human being. I left my church when I was 5, telling my Mother after I came home from Sunday School that I wasnβt going back, ever. Being the daughter of a Presbyterian Minister, she asked me why, and encouraged me to go back. My response was that they talked love and care during Sunday School, but then were really mean the rest of the time. She allowed me to stay home. I tried again when I was 16, but got up and walked out in the middle of the sermon, never to return. I saw the Minister and knew he was molesting young girls, so that was then end of any church-going for me.
For what it's worth, it doesn't really matter if being gay is a sin or not. We are all sinners, redeemed by the blood of Jesus. Jesus taught us (responding to a trick question) that the greatest commandment is ββLove the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.β[a] 38 This is the first and greatest commandment. 39 And the second is like it: βLove your neighbor as yourself.β[b] 40 All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments.β Matthew 22:36-40
How then can I hate my brother or sister because they love differently than I? (The correct answer is "I cannot.")
Thanks for keeping the posting happening on a yearly basis and thanks for those who share your link on FB an elsewhere.
Your words "Polite hate is the most dangerous kind of hate. It loads the gun, then just backs away quietly." are a reminder that we all need to remember.
I LOVE this! Yesterday the βnice church ladiesβ π started with their anti pride nonsense in our local moms group. I was happy to see so many folks stand up and out against the hate mongers. Happy Pride π³οΈβπ π³οΈββ§οΈ
Being homophobic is different than calling someone a homophobe. People who behave in that manner are judging and being haters. I will continue to spread what I believe is the way Jesus would react to those who do not respect all for who they love.
Dear MK. I read your article I want to thank you as I am a member of the community. I have lost many family and friends because of some of the things you have mentioned. I too was also raised in a small town.
People have said its gotten better. And maybe some ways it has. But as a member I can also say it has gotten worse though too.
My name is dakotah and I hope to continue to hear the word spread because if no one does then how can we stop it?
Came across your amazing post of this on FB and subscribed to your substack.. Absolutely Beautiful!!! Thank you, Sweet Ally! β€οΈβ€οΈβ€οΈβ€οΈβ€οΈ
Thank you, Mary Katherine, for reminding people that not all straight Christians are judgemental like that! I had a family member, as well as a little boy I took care of for years, and both came out as adults. It never bothered me with either one. All I cared about was they were happy, and they were with someone who treated them well. Whether a person is gay, straight, bi, or whatever, that's how God made them-and intended them to be!

This! "Pride is the spirit of millions of people who have chosen to dance in the crosshairs."
Love the title of the article!

Thank you for speaking up again. Jesus would be so proud of you. Not the homophobic losers who claim to be Christians.
Name calling isnt very Christ like now is it lol if yall dont like the hate, stop spreading it.
